Cataract surgery is the only proven way to treat cataracts in adults. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the cloudy natural lens of the eye and replaces it with a clear, artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL allows light to pass through the eye and be focused properly.Â
Cataract surgery is usually an outpatient procedure that takes less than 30 minutes and is performed under local anesthetic. Most people experience little to no pain during or after the surgery. Recovery is usually quick, with most people able to resume most daily activities within days and fully recover within about a month.Â
