Ultrasonography
An eye ultrasound, also known as ocular ultrasonography, is a painless and safe diagnostic procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create and image of the eye and surrounding structures.
During the procedure, a transducer, or ultrasound wand, is gently placed against the eye or eyelid. The sound waves travel through the eye and create echoes that are converted into a digital image on a screen. The test typically takes about 15 minutes.
Eye ultrasounds can help diagnose a variety of conditions, including:
- Retinal detachment
- Cataracts
- Disorders behind the eye
- Diabetic retinopathy complications
- Intraocular tumors
- Foreign objects in the eye
- Orbital lesions
