Eye specialist

What is an eye specialist?

An eye specialist is a healthcare provider who specializes in the care of your eyes and vision. There are several types of eye specialists, including:

  • Ophthalmologists

These medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathy (DOs) diagnose and treat eye and vision conditions, and can perform surgery. They also prescribe medications, contact lenses, and glasses. Ophthalmologists can specialize in specific areas of eye care, such as:

    • Paediatric ophthalmology: Focuses on eye problems in children
    • Retinal specialist: Deals with retinal and vitreous diseases
    • Cornea and external disease specialist: Focuses on disorders of the cornea, sclera, conjunctiva, and eyelids
  • Optometrists
These eye doctors diagnose and treat common eye diseases and vision problems. They have a doctor of optometry (OD) degree and attend optometry school.
  • Opticians
These technicians fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision-correcting devices. They work with patients after they receive a prescription from an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Ophthalmologists emphasize the importance of preventive care, such as regular eye exams and protecting your eyes from UV light. They can also recognize other health problems that aren’t directly related to the eye
