An eye surgeon is a medical doctor, also known as an ophthalmologist, who specializes in eye care and performs eye surgeries:
Training
Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathy (DOs) who complete at least 12 to 14 years of training, including four years of college, four years of medical school, and at least four years of medical and surgical training.

Ophthalmologists provide a wide range of eye care services, including:
- Diagnosing and treating eye diseases and visual disorders
- Prescribing medication
- Fitting glasses and contact lenses
- Performing eye surgeries
Specializations
Some ophthalmologists subspecialize in cataract surgery. Others subspecilize in oculoplastic surgery, which involves plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face and periorbital tissues.
