Glaucoma laser surgery

Glaucoma laser surgery is a procedure that uses a laser to treat glaucoma by helping fluid drain from the eye, which reduces pressure inside the eye.

Laser peripheral iridotomy

A small hole is created in the iris to allow fluid to flow between the front and back of the eye. This procedure is often used to treat angle closure glaucoma and to prevent attacks for those at risk.

Laser trabeculoplasty

A laser is used to open the drainage tubes in the eye. This is the most common type of laser surgery for glaucoma and is usually performed in an office setting. There are two types of laser trabeculoplasty: argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) and selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). SLT is the newer, more targeted version of ALT.

Cyclodiode laser treatment

A laser is used to destroy some of the tissue that produces fluid in the eye.
Laser treatment is usually performed while you’re awake with the help of local anesthetic eye drops. You may experience some brief pain or heat during the procedure.

Other treatments for glaucoma include eyedrops, oral medications, and surgery. Surgery is usually performed in a hospital and involves implanting a small tube into the eye to help drain fluid.
