Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) is a procedure that uses small incisions and advanced technology to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in the eye. MIGS is a safer alternative to traditional glaucoma surgeries, which involve large incisions.
MIGS procedures can include:
- Implanting devices: Small devices like the iStent, Hydrus, or XEN stent are inserted into the eye to create a new pathway for fluid to drain
- Laser photocoagulation: A milder version of laser therapy
MIGS is best suited for patients with mild to moderate glaucoma and is often performed in conjunction with cataract surgery. The procedure is relatively quick, takes place under local anesthetic, and is associated with a rapid recovery time.

- Reduced risk of complications like infection, scarring, and hypotony
- Decreased need for glaucoma medication
- Significant decrease in IOP over time
Potential risks of MIGS include: Increased eye pressure, Very low eye pressure, Bleeding inside the eye, Endothelial cell loss, and Endophthalmitis (infection within the eye).
