Healthy eyes

Healthy eyes have good vision, are well-lubricated, and have a white sclera. Normal vision acuity, or sharpness, is 20/20, which means you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance.  It is also good to have a dome-shaped cornea that bends light correctly onto the lens.

Some things you can do to keep your eyes healthy include:

Eat well: Eat a balanced diet with foods that contain vitamins A, C, and E, as well as zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and lutein and zeaxanthin. Good sources include leafy greens, fish, nuts, seeds, and brightly colored fruits and vegetables.

  • Exercise regularly: Exercise can help prevent diabetes, which is a major cause of vision loss.
  • Protect your eyes: Wear safety glasses when working outside or at work.
  • Get enough sleep: Seven to eight hours of sleep per night can help your eyes recharge.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink two to three liters of water or unsweetened tea each day.
Many eye diseases don’t have warning signs, so it’s important to get regular eye exams.
